绪论

这是清朝雍正9年发生的事：
那时乾隆皇帝尚未封爵，只称“四阿哥”，奉了世宗的密令，微行探访直隶总都唐执玉的官声。“四阿哥”邀平郡王福彭同行，并由方观承带了4名便服的侍卫暗中保护。
这天到了昌平州地方，行经一座茶棚，下马暂息，一面喝茶，一面打听民情。四阿哥见茶棚间壁面有一方市招，上写八个大字：一尘子论命不论人。心中一动，便悄悄拉了福彭一把，努一努嘴说：你看，这一尘子的市招，似乎对他自己的子平之术满有把握的。
“老王”，这是事先约定好的称呼，福彭问道：“想不想试他一试”……
